Welcome to the Bunker Questionnaire, a series in which we ask Bunker Projects residents and exhibiting artists a few questions based on Marcel Proust’s famous Proust Questionnaire, a survey that purported to reveal a person’s true nature. We hope their answers and the accompanying photos allow you to get to know them and their work a little bit more.
Young one’s practice unfolds as an ongoing dialogue between her body and the world, spanning painting, drawing, photography, and spatial installation. Walking is central to her work as both metaphor and embodied practice. She invites materials from the time and place she inhabits into the work as collaborators, from organic and industrial fragments to wood chunks and translucent fabric. Layering, sanding, and sustained care allow her to synthesize others’ traces and machine logic with her own visual decisions and labor, revealing the surface as a site where countless overlapping times converge in the now.
Young one is from South Korea and currently travels from site to site across the U.S. She received her BFA in Oriental Painting from Seoul National University and her MFA in Painting from Boston University. Her work has been exhibited at Morgan Lehman in New York, Boston Cyberarts, and CICA Vancouver.

What is your idea of happiness?
“Being immersed, and the sense of fulfillment that remains outside that immersion.”
Where do you go or what do you do when you need inspiration to recharge?
“I walk, take photographs, and collect things along the way. I love visiting local parks in different weather, seasons, and light.”
What draws you to do artist residencies?
“I believe that life itself is my practice, and that the meeting between myself and the world remains my work. I am mapping the sensory trajectories of how I respond, now, in the context of this place. Residencies give me the chance to experience a place deeply, where living itself becomes part of the work, with amazing people.”
