Welcome to the Bunker Questionnaire, a series in which we ask Bunker Projects residents and exhibiting artists a few questions based on Marcel Proust’s famous Proust Questionnaire, a survey that purported to reveal a person’s true nature. We hope their answers and the accompanying photos allow you to get to know them and their work a little bit more.
Jacq Groves (Queens, NY) is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher, and educator. Working across sculpture, installation, printmaking, and alternative photographic methods, Groves examines the intersections of trans embodiment, disability, queer ecology and systems of knowledge. At the root of their practice, they’re interested in making visual porous boundaries between bodies and surrounding environments, as well as scientific systems.
Recent solo exhibitions include a site-specific installation for Wave Hill’s Sunroom Project Space in the Bronx. Their work has been exhibited throughout New York City at Springs Projects, Essex Flowers, The Jewish Museum, The Wallach Art Gallery, and Half Gallery. Nationally, they have exhibited at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, White Page Gallery, and Edgewood Gallery at Yale University and many more.
Previous residencies include Loghaven Artist Residency, Stove Works, Vermont Studio Center, and NARS Foundation. They received an MFA in Visual Art from Columbia University in 2022 and recently completed the Foundation Fellowship in Arts + Sciences at Pratt Institute.
Describe yourself in three words
“Curious, playful, and nerdy!”
What’s your favorite studio ritual or habit?
“Dancing when I get stuck and uptight. And I don’t mean good dancing… I mean like jumping around and moving because my work is getting too constrained. Of course there is a time and place for order, but often I need to get out of my own way and silly movement is the best way to get my creative intuition back in alignment.”
What draws you to do artist residencies?
“The time to explore, delve deep, and (simultaneously) unplug. In addition to working hard solo in the studio researching and making, I love getting to know a new city and a new community when in residence. I thrive creatively in new environments when I get to challenge my intuitive ways of working! Also, I love getting to know new art communities and learning about others’ practices.”
