Welcome to the Bunker Questionnaire, a series in which we ask Bunker Projects residents and exhibiting artists a few questions based on Marcel Proust’s famous Proust Questionnaire, a survey that purported to reveal a person’s true nature. We hope their answers and the accompanying photos allow you to get to know them and their work a little bit more.

Nathan Bussard is a ceramic artist currently based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Through an autobiographical lens, his work explores the intricate intersectionality of the human experience centered on queerness, sexuality, spiritually and symbolism. His current work uses nature, symbolism, pattern and functional form to reflect autobiographical moments of change, growth and catalytic shifts within his own story as an investigation of the complexities that exist in our human selves.

What is your idea of happiness?

“My idea of happiness is when you are so in the moment of something—dinner with friends, a creative project, dancing, sitting in the sunshine—that everything else melts away, time seems to stop, and you get lost in the moment.”

Where do you go or what do you do when you need inspiration to recharge?

“I dive into a good book and just get sucked into the pages. For inspiration, I turn to nature.”

What’s the next goal or milestone you are working toward in your practice?

“My next goal is a solo show of the current series I am working on.”

What’s the best creative advice you’ve received?

“Don’t create work for what you think others will like, create the work that is burning inside you to get out.”
