Fat suits, fat masks, fat halloween costumes. Fat tropes in film and media. All are designed to position fatness as a problematized way of being. These are tools used to identify and criticise otherness. The Whale steals both its title (Aronofsky’s film The Whale, 2022) and these objects of ridicule to critique their existence and purpose. A fat suit is turned into a clown suit, a fat horror mask titled ‘Fatty Hamskins’ and prosthetic inflatable bellies reconfigure into an imposing serpent, a bust wearing a double chinned fat mask sheds fake tears of cheeto dust cheese. 

This exhibition exposes our cultural biases while communicating fat people's frustration that these biases continue to exist. Repositioning these objects to expose their implicit bigotry allows the viewer to glimpse the feelings of fat people. We are angry, we are hurt, and we roll our eyes at the absurdity.

Exhibition

Zoë Schneider (she/her) works in sculpture, video, and installation to critically examine the complexity of fat identity. Schneider holds an MFA from the University of Saskatchewan (2018), and a BFA from the Alberta University of the Arts (2009). In Canada, Schneider has exhibited solo and group exhibitions in Regina, Saskatoon, Estevan, Guelph, Mississauga, Lethbridge, and internationally in Denmark, Germany, and the United States. Schneider’s first international solo exhibition will take place in Pittsburgh, PA in the Fall of 2024. Schneider is the 2021 recipient of the Visual Award for Female Artist, Jane Turnbull Evans Fund from the Saskatchewan Foundation for the Arts and has received multiple artist grants from SK Arts and the Canada Council for the Arts. Schneider lives and works in Regina, Treaty 4 Territory, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Hey friend,

How are you? How could anyone possibly be? It feels as if we are bolting as people - throwing out our most dazzling flowers and our worst horrors - plummeting towards an end. And maybe we are nearing an end? Or maybe that is just what every generation thinks. I had a conversation with a friend this summer about being in constant oscillation between wanting to end it all and wanting to live forever. Sometimes that line becomes a circle, and the feelings coexist. I’m working in patterns lately, seeing them as a physical manifestation of time cycles, and building my own little time capsules.

I have been trying to process my feelings about moving away from Florida - a place I became so many versions of myself. The gulf, the swamp, the heat, the endless varieties of citrus, and the year round growing season are now a part of me. I continue to grow things here, and it feels small but magical. My marigolds bloomed in a surprising brilliant yellow, and I see them as a mirror. Moments like this are when everything aligns. The light hits the water at just the right angle and I see the green flash. The endless barrage of input and information changes frequency, and although the static does not stop, I can find space in it as a system I know how to navigate. I feel my feet below me on the sandy bottom. I lift, and float, and watch the clouds pass above. The water is warm, and I am water too. What makes it all make sense for you?
