Nick Sardo's practice centers around a satirical take on the idea of the divine. He draws from a wide variety of sources, ranging from Byzantine iconography to offbeat, gory 1980’s cartoons, the majority of his current efforts in the studio involve painting in oils, which he approaches experimentally on paper and more elaborately on custom-shaped wood panels that he builds himself. His work shows singular figures that inhabit the roles of idol and worshiper, created from clashes of organic form and imagined objects. Though these figures are always alone, some loom over the viewer, powerful and ornate, while others are shriveled and whimpering. They are simultaneously uncomfortable and demanding of your attention, evoking consistent themes of isolation and redemption. At the core, there is always a “self” to his figures, a mysterious past you can’t put your finger on but know is there.
