Welcome to the Bunker Questionnaire, a series in which we ask Bunker Projects residents and exhibiting artists a few questions based on Marcel Proust’s famous Proust Questionnaire, a survey that purported to reveal a person’s true nature. We hope their answers and the accompanying photos allow you to get to know them and their work a little bit more.

Nathan Borradaile Wright is an artist based out of Providence, RI, whose practice combines sculpture and installation with video, experimental material processes, and glass. Originally from suburban New Jersey, his work is particularly concerned with the relationship between individual and environment, and with the landscapes, routes, landmarks, and routines through which collective experiences of identification and alienation are produced. Wright received his MFA in Experimental and Documentary Art from Duke University in 2022 and BFA in Glass from RISD in 2016.

Describe yourself in three words

“Reflective, Buzzing, and Bright”

Who are your favorite artists/the ones who’ve influenced you most?

“Some of the artists that I keep returning to are Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, as well as Doris Salcedo and Roni Horn. They each approach material as both a subject in its own right and as the occasion for a larger conversation.”

What is your idea of happiness?

“The feeling on the second day of a long car trip when you’re just in a totally new landscape.”

What’s your favorite studio ritual or habit?

“I love the moments when you get to unpack all of your special and interesting objects, and see them all laid out in one space. But then I also love when you do a really thorough deep clean, and the studio is completely, absolutely empty.”
