Exhibition

Crouched over the garden bed, March air breathing, we peer into wondrous depths of overwintered soil. Remnants of late autumn death are laid bare. Webs of greyed straw cover skeletonized leaves; brown fungi cluster along bark decayed to powder; citrus rinds curl between worms and obliterated Roma vines. Cupped in hands, shoveled into piles, crumpled in corners, pressed beneath fingernails, life persists.

Glowing in That Waste considers decomposition and the necessity of decay. The works reflect on the beauty of matter breaking down to nourish further life. They emerge from looking closely at my garden, the woods, and the various dusty, buggy corners of my house. The exhibition is also a practice of attending closely to the life around me and, by extension, to the decay of my own body.

The exhibition title is borrowed from Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. Looking at his son walking ahead of him through an apocalyptic landscape, an ill father describes him as “glowing in that waste like a tabernacle”. 


Maggie Bjorklund is a visual artist working primarily in oil paint. She lives and works in her hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her work has been exhibited nationally in Chicago, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and Columbus, and was featured in Two Coats of Paint in 2025. Her work is included in the Tomayko Collection in Pittsburgh. She has been awarded residencies at Bunker Projects (2024) and Field Day x Associated Artists of Pittsburgh (2026). She holds a Bachelor of Arts from DePaul University.
