This work is an ongoing record of efforts taken by a global community to stop the genocide in Gaza, which Amnesty International has recently reported continues despite the current sham of a ceasefire.
It records direct efforts like the recent flotilla attempts, and indirect efforts like the conservation of tatreez (Palestinian embroidery), historical efforts to allow Palestine their right to control their ports, and other efforts to help educate and encourage our communities to take action to ensure a free Palestine.

Joanna Cortez trained in printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. In her practice, she draws imagery from plants, patterns and motifs found in the US southwest, Mexico, Jordan and Palestine. Her work attempts to be one more contemporary voice among many, unweaving narratives relegating her heritage to ancient times, propaganda, myth or as vanished. Her practice is in part record keeping, but she hopes it remains a vehicle for storytelling and continued conversations about heritage and our shared humanity. She hopes more than anything to see a free Palestine in her lifetime.
Joanna Cortez is a Andy Warhol Foundation grantee via the Interlace Grant Fund, a Helen Frankenthaler Foundation grant recipient, and is a current Fellow at the Kala Art Institute. She currently lives and works in Rhode Island.
