Laurie Trok is a Pittsburgh based multidisciplinary artist. She studied classical flute performance at Duquesne University before finding her footing as a visual artist.

Laurie’s work both poses questions and imagines alternatives. At the heart she holds a disciplined approach to play, be it with frosting or felt. The ephemeral world of food and music continues to challenge and inform her studio practice. Food became more central to her practice during the pandemic when she started getting serious about baking and creating edible sculptures for community consumption (cake!).

Laurie has exhibited in several group and solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Carnegie Museum of Art, The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. Laurie lives with her partner and two young children in Penn Hills. They are the best art teachers she has had to date.

exhibition statement

All objects are created—either by hand or machine, many amidst the soot and ashes of a once-industrial city. Within this realm of (f)utility and utility, objects teeter on the brink of obsolescence, entering a completely unique process of recycling and repurposing. Artist Cole Modell carries out his subtle and deliberate augmentations, lightly shifting the viewer's perception of commonly useful objects and entering them into a new realm of quietly playful, interactive art objects.

These found objects undergo a signature transformation where it is always necessary to work with the form of the found objects, not against them. Every consideration is made to preserve their aesthetic and structural integrity. Ultimately, the body of work finds itself composed on the walls and floors in a light and playful arrangement which in some cases, is unfixed and changing. In addition to the sculptures the show also includes multiple painting shaped objects that throw a distant bone at classical painting. A line drawing entombed in fractured plexiglass joins two encaustic panels, alongside a collage. Beeswax floods the surface, acting as a protective agent or a preservative. In Modell’s artistic practice, each object leaves his hand in a new context of existence. The work invites reflection on the world we inhabit with objects and the endless possibilities for repurposing and renewal.
